"For in and out, above, about, below,
‘Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show,
Play’d in a Box whose Candle is the Sun,
Round which we Phantom Figures come and go."
– Omar Khayyam

"I haven't acutually read J.H. Curle's novel "The Shadow Show", but from what I have thumbed through it does not contain the lysergic imagery of children at marbles, nor does it play on  Aesop type fables of tigers & butterflies for that matter.  I have in any case stolen a few of its more interesting chapter names as titles, & they seem to fit the cause.  The closest I can offer by way of explanation would be that I have tried to give an impression of what is important in each, only showing what is necessary.  This work is a culmination of newly developed ideas & old sketch book practises, they offer glimpses, like shadows or dreams, at some sort of meaning that flashes through  the mind.  However, no sooner am I aware of this flash than it disappears & I lose the meaning."
